BDA: Egypt and the Nile

We spent some time in class today reading from the text. Students should have learned about the geography of Egypt and the Nile as well as some of the communities that flourished in the region. We have talked about how important the Nile River is to the people who live in Egypt. Some have even said that, "Egypt is a gift of the Nile." Without the Nile, there would be no civilization in that part of the world.

Earlier, we learned about the Fertile Crescent and how the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers were important to the people in Mesopotamia. A common theme is developing: People generally need a 'water source' to survive. A water source, such as the Nile, provides people with all of the following: food, water, transportation, a means for trade, fertile soil for growing crops, and can provide a civilization with a natural boundary. Can any of you think of something besides a water source that is important to civilization? Post your thoughts...

The newest set of key terms are: Nubia, Nile, Silt, Cataract, and Delta. If you have any questions about those terms, feel free to post them here...

climate is also important. If the place is too hot the civizilation may not fnction properly. Animals would too hot etc. If the civilizaion was cold, the crops could freeze or even die etc.

@Cameron - Very good Cameron! Climate is very important. It was even more important in ancient history when people didn't have technology to help them stay warm (heaters) or keep cool (air conditioners). Could you imagine living in PA during the winter without heat? It can be done, but it isn't very desirable. As always, great thinking!

Elevation is also important. If a civilization lives up too high in the mountians, the people might not be able to find food as good as the people that live lower in elevation. The people who are at a good elevation could have a great climate for growing crops. I don't even know if there are mountians in Egypt anyway................. I don't think people live on top of pyramids................. That would be cool though........

@MacK - Elevation. Interesting... I think that elevation could be important to civilization. For instance, there is less oxygen in the air at higher elevations which makes it difficult for some people to breathe. Furthermore, higher elevations tend to have a cooler climate which may not be the most comfortable.

As far as the presence of mountains in Egypt, there really are some there. Along the coast there are mountains as well as on the Sinai Peninsula.

I think thatif the land is too high in the mountains the land would be too rocky. Therefore, people could not plant crops or it would be too hard for animals to live here...for example, cows and sheep could not graze there.

@Yordany - Good point! I like how your further addressed MacK's point about elevation. Your examples do a great job of supporting your comment. Excellente!
