The Geography of Greece (Continued)

Today, students spent some time looking at a photograph of the Greek coast and read a short section from their text pertaining to the geography of Greece. Some of the common geographic features which were observed were:

1. Islands/Peninsulas
2. Mountains
3. Proximity to the Sea
4. Limited Farmland (1/5 of the total area)

Students were also introduced to the first essential question of the Greece Unit: How has the geographic setting of Greece impacted the lives of the people who have lived there throughout history?

We will spend some more time talking about these points in class over the next few days and begin to compare some of the various groups of people who shared the land.

Questions/Comments?

Did the belief in gods have an affect on the geography? I mean like did the ancient greeks believe that the geography was the way it was because they thoguht the gods warped it on purpose. If so, did the people believe it was a curse if the land was bad or a blessing if the land was great??

@MacK - Sorry! I have to admit that the new baby has impacted my blog adversely. I will TRY to stay current and respond to posts and such.

You posed a very good question (on January 31st). It is likely that the Greeks believed the gods were able to control (or warp) geography depending upon the actions of mortals. That is to say that they may be rewarded or punished based up their actions by the gods in the form of 'good' or 'bad' geographic features. Wheeew! You always ask the most thoughtful questions; as always, I am proud of your dedication to my class and school in general!!!!
